“Some people claim that reading books is the best cultural influence, and still others maintain that you can get the most in the quickest split second time by listening to lectures, but what I always say is, ‘There’s nothing more broadening than travel.’” - Sinclair Lewis, “Travel Is So Broadening”

Our Arts Critic Responds to the ‘Useless Majors’...

newsweek:

Our Arts Critic Responds to the ‘Useless Majors’ List

When Blake Gopnik, Newsweek & The Daily Beast’s arts critic, saw that arts degrees made up the majority of our ‘13 useless college majors’ list, he was a little upset, so we asked for a post from Blake to put it all into context.

Here’s Blake (follow him on tumblr!):

I say we could simply re-title The Daily Beast’s survey as “The 13 Most Useful College Majors” and it would be equally valid.

After all, who’s more important today, Rembrandt or the people who bought his art? Monet or the people who bought his? Van Gogh or the rich idiots who FAILED to buy what he made? Useless is as useless does, I say, and it seems pretty clear to me that, across history, many of the people who made the biggest difference had training in the most useless professions. (Aristotle, anyone?)

Again, which is more useless, adding another million dollars to the millions you already have, or adding a new work of art, or a new thought, to the world’s store of ideas? The single biggest problem the world has today, by far is that people in the West are used to owning and using too much, and are setting an impossible example for the rest of the planet. (See the new movie called “Surviving Progress”). So there’s real-world, practical virtue in living modestly, “uselessly”, and taking your pleasure from the thoughts and ideas you acquired in getting your “useless” degree in art or poetry or philosophy. The world will not be a better place when more people have more money and stuff. It can ONLY be better when more people have better thoughts.

I’m proud to say that my first degree, in medieval history, and my second and third, in art history, are as useless as they come. I’d do them all over again.

PS: The most recent issue of Newsweek magazine ran a nice long and positive review of a book by philosopher Michael Sandel claiming that money is not the measure of all things – and that it’s ruining America’s values.

Read the Michael Sandel book review // Follow Blake on Tumblr

(Ed: Oooh! Ooh! We just so happen to have a live chat planned with Michael Sandel on Wednesday at 1pm ET. We swear this wasn’t planned, but so cool Blake mentioned the book review.)

Last Saturday (March 31, 2012), we welcomed the newest batch of INKies at the Orientation Seminar held at the UP College of Fine Arts Auditorium.

This year has been record breaking application period as 68 applicants sent over their entries. The org had a tough time deliberating on the works because the talent level was incredibly high. In the end, 30 applicants made the cut.

During the Seminar, veteran INKies and multi-awarded artists Jomike Tejido and Brian Vallesteros shared their works and the things they’ve learned in their careers. Then PBBY-Alcala Prize Winner Hubert Fucio and Honorable Mentions Domz Agsaway, Jonathan Rañola and Aldy Aguirre discussed their winning entries into the competition.

The Seminar finished off with each of the new INKies presenting their portfolios. Here’s hoping for a fruitful 2012 with the “Newkies”. :)

Here are the newest INKies:

Ang, Audrey

Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (or the Illustrators for Children) is the Philippine’s first and only association of artists committed to the creation and promotion of illustrations for children. Ang INK was founded on June 7, 1991 during a Children’s Book Illustration Workshop sponsored by the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY) and the Goethe-Institut Manila. The workshop was conducted by visiting German illustrator Reinhard Michl.

Ang INK was born out of a belief that an organized interaction and collective effort among colleagues is vital to the professionalization and development of the industry.

During its first year, Ang INK grew from 21 workshop participants to more than 70 members. Today there are over 300 active and inactive members coming from different fields and areas of discipline such publishing, advertising, animation, graphic design and the academe.

In it’s over 20 year history, the organization has held over 30 exhibitions touching on different aspects of Philippine life, history and culture. So far it has published 5 books as an organization while its members have illustrated and at times written countless children’s books over the past two decades.

Ang INK’s members have continually been awarded in both Philippine and International award competitions over the years. We fondly call ourselves, “INKies.”

The Ang INK catalog is a DIY piece made by the members and given to various companies and publications who may need the services of an illustrator. It’s a self-promo piece and sadly, it has seen better days. Over the years, the catalog has gotten thinner and thinner. Extending deadlines never seems to help as fewer and fewer members bother to make entries.

There used to be a time when entries by Pepper Roxas and Robert Alejandro were lovely little fold-out affairs.

For the this year’s INK Orientation Seminar, Fran Alvarez made a short video (shot and edited with her iPhone 4S no less) showcasing some INK Catalogs over the years. Here’s hoping it inspires both old and new members to submit their own exciting entries.

The Pebble Toad from Venezuela is hunted by Toad-eating Tarantulas, but is able to escape by turning itself into a rubber ball. The toad is so tiny and weighs so little that bouncing doesn’t hurt it at all. (Life - BBC)
